Who we are

It is now over 30 years since a small group of very determined parents of people with learning disabilities set up KEY.

They were deeply committed to making sure that their own sons and daughters and other people with learning disabilities would get the support they needed to live a full life in their community. They were so committed that they were prepared to take on the challenges of setting up and managing a new organisation to provide this support.

They had a clear vision that people with learning disabilities should receive whatever specific help they needed to live in and contribute to their local communities. Over the years they have made this vision a reality, embracing all the various changes in community care policy and funding along the way.

 

Today KEY is a modern and dynamic support organisation which provides individual support to over 1,400 people in cities, towns and villages throughout Scotland. The nature of the organisation has changed greatly over the years, but the vision remains the same - to help every individual we support to live life to the full.

A number of parents are still involved in the management of KEY and over the years there has been a shift toward greater participation by the people we support in our governance arrangements. We benefit from a vibrant structure of Advisory Groups made up of people we support. These groups constantly keep KEY in touch with what matters most in people's lives and play an important role in shaping the way KEY is.
